2010 State Legislative Sessions

In the next few months, state legislatures begin 2010 sessions. Many face the same economic uncertainties as 2009, with most seeing large budget shortfalls. Because of this, proposals to increase tobacco taxes are anticipated as a way to offset these deficits.

Given that retailers and wholesalers – and their adult tobacco customers – are still adjusting to federal and state excise tax increases from 2009, it’s even more important to engage in the political process to prevent further taxation. As 2010 sessions begin, legislators must clearly understand the negative consequences of higher tobacco taxes: lost sales and jobs, lower profits, and increased crime.

To the right are states facing serious threats from increased tobacco excise taxes. This list, which will be updated as circumstances change, is a starting point to engage your legislators – to increase their awareness of the negative impacts of tobacco taxation.

Only by being part of the political process can we make our voices heard and protect our business. Working together, we can make a difference.
